Before I entered in the world of Film Making, I thoroughly read a lot of articles / blogs / interviews and whatever I got on internet about the low budget film making. I found that so much have been written on the topic Low Budget Movies. However, I was astonished to see that articles written by Indian writers were very less in comparison with Hollywood Writer. It was also surprising that they (hollywood writer ) do not hesitate to make experiments for making a Low Budget Film / Zero Budget Film.
During my search for knowledge about Low Budget Films, on Internet, I came across an article where I came to about a film called El Mariachi. I was very much impressed from the making of the film and creativity of the Director, I am sure if any Indian Producer / Director had ever been done this experiment, he would loved to be called SANKI (eccentric). Just have a look at the facts given below which itself justify my statement.
Robert Rodrigues had a dream for film making. It was his debut as a writer / director. The film was made in Spanish language. It was a low budget movie and Robert Rodrigues had to work hard for making the film under US $9000….. This is why he cut cost at ever possible opportunity. For instance, a wheel chair was used instead of Dolly. No professional lights used, two desk lamp of 200 watt were used instead. And the most amazing part, only one camera is used through the entire movie. In the end only 24 roles of films were used and he spent only $7,225 out of $9000 he planned initially.
Later Columbia Pictures bought American distribution rights and spent several times more than the original budget on 35 mm transfers, promotion, marketing and distribution for the film originally made for Mexican home video market. It was EL MARIACHI.
As soon as I read the article about El Mariachi I decided to make a Low Budget Film for which the budget was set in Lacs. As soon as people around me come to know about my project they started demoralizing me. I was shocked, no one was there to support me. But I was not ready to give up without a trial.
On set whenever I tried to make a new experiment, lots of voices raised that this is not professional. Frankly speaking, I realized that people are not ready to accept the changes easily. They just want to do things in the same manner as they have been told to do by their predecessor.
Just want to suggest my dear friends please be ready to accept the unusual and unique way when making a film. An idea might seem to be inappropriate but it can work well for the Film and can add more creativity in the project.

As an independent filmmaker, how do you make the movie you want to make, when you don’t have funds? The biggest problem with investors is that they generally want their money back. It’s really annoying. Some of them even want their money back plus a profit. Apparently general people don’t understand movie investments. While as a movie maker we are in a position to offer our investors many things — the thrill of being an integral part of an artistic experiment, the joy of watching talent bloom, the sheer excitement of being involved in the moviemaking process and seeing their names in lights – a guaranteed payback is, sadly, not on our list of deliverables. So when we begin scouring our hometown for investors, we want to seek out people who are clearly much more excited about the process of making a digital feature than its actual outcome, profit-wise. If an investor is simply looking for a fast or hefty return, it’s best to suggest that they look elsewhere.
When making my first Hindi Feature Film I faced a lot of problems in funding the film. No one was ready to finance as I was new to the world of Hindi Cinema. I run from post to pillar but all in vain. But I did not give up. Finally I got result of my tolerance and one of my friend got ready for funding my Film and this is how I made LOVE420 a musical thriller. I was quite lucky but not everyone could get their luck easily. Meanwhile Mr Onir ( I AM fame) made the funding possible through Facebook. Though I got this idea in my mind two year back but Mr Onir made it practically possible. Around 400 Facebook people joined hands with Mr Onir and rest of the Fund was provided by Ms Juhi Chawla (the famous Bollywood Actress). Finally the film hit theaters and got a good response from views. I am also trying to apply the same formula for my next Hindi Feature Film. If you would like to get it made, you can join me and become a co-owner either by volunteering to work for the film or put in Rs. 1,000 or more and become part of the film and watch your name on the Indian Silver Screen.
